Event Director
We had wonderful weather at the Presidio, with views well across the Bay. That surely helped with turnout, with about 240 people (140 entries) gathered on the Fort Scott grounds to kick off our Summer Series.
While we compile the final results, I was glad to hear from the competitors that had fun out there, even when we had more of a runner's course. I apologize for that, I found the terrain and restrictions quite hard to work with, in a park where the road is almost always the fastest option. But we'll learn!
If you went to the other side of the park, Dennis Wildfogel set up the opposite kind of course — a technical Sprint full of obstacles and route choices. Everyone I met coming back to download was really winded and happy to have made the trek.
We'll hope for a more open park and some fun navigation next year, and also definitely at DVC at the end of June.
I have so much to be thankful for, and so many people to thank.
- On top of getting a whole separate event running, Dennis Wildfogel was a kind mentor every step of the way, thinking three steps ahead and paying attention to the most minute details.
- Thank you to Jason Lee, who helped with planning, vetting, setup, and importantly caught a mistake right before we opened the course.
- Thanks to Greg Callas for vetting and setting up the courses, plus impromptu taking a full shift of starts!
- Drew Taplin covered the second starts shift under a blistering sun.
- Victoria bore through hours of course planning, vetted courses, and helped me set them up.
- Dan Huang and a few others helped us set up in the morning.
- As always Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Matthias Kohler, and Chuck Spalding were the registration super heroes, and a shutout to Trevor Melusen, first-time volunteer and kind greeter.
- Jeff Lanam and Phil Lacroute had a particularly hard task with E-punch for the many people who ran multiple courses.
- Dan Green stoically did clinics the whole day.
- Kat, Josh, and Drew helped me with control pickup, and Weichun took down the assembly area.
- I can't forget Gavin Wyat-Mair who got us the infamous cones, and also hauled a few more there and back.
I'm sure I forgot someone, but I truly appreciate the effort everyone put into this event.
I hope to see you at Diablo Valley College on June 27th.
Comments from the Sprint Event Director

Many thanks to Matteo, first for stepping in as Course Setter when the original Course Setter found himself unable to take on the task, and then for all the time and effort he put in to make good courses despite all the restrictions imposed by the land owners, and also the difficulties of working with a very non-standard map. Matteo is also the Course Setter for our very next event, at DVC, undoubtedly setting a record for the soonest anyone in BAOC has ever been Course Setter for the second time after being one for the first time!
In addition to all the people I thanked in the Sprint Course Setters Notes, I'd like to thank Steve Gregg for taking over as Sprint Starter for the second half of the window, and Tapio Karras for picking up half the controls as I picked up the other half.
I hope that those of you who came all the way over from Ft Scott to the Sprint, and then went back to Ft Scott to download, found the whole experience worth your while.
Update from the E-Punch Director:
Thanks for your patience. The split files are now loaded to Winsplits and Attackpoint. Note that the leg lengths in Attackpoint only have the Beginner and Short courses — the times are complete. I don't know why the Long course lengths are missing; the Sprint course was in a separate file and Attackpoint only takes one. WinSplits doesn't use the leg lengths.
Below are the final results. A few times were changed because they didn't punch the Start, so I had to estimate the first leg.
