About 200 people came out to Huddart Park to participate in the first forested orienteering event south of the Golden Gate since the start of the pandemic. They enjoyed a glorious autumn day, a beautiful but rugged park, and John Richardson's excellent courses. It was a delight to see so many familiar faces, as well as lots of newcomers.
There were challenges, of course, beginning with the six-month wait for San Mateo County to begin issuing special event permits. Then there was the forestry work in the park that forced John to re-route a significant portion of the Yellow course, and tweak a couple of the advanced courses a week before the event. Finally, on Monday, we were alerted by a club member of the big trail run taking place at Huddart the same day as our event.
In the end, in spite of the frustration from many people at trying to find parking, it all came together, thanks to the efforts of many volunteers:

Club veterans may have noticed a significant enhancement of the Huddart map. The map colors now represent the park's complex vegetation far more realistically. Bill Cusworth used the vegetation mapping capability of LiDAR technology to create a base of white and greens, subsequently refined by field work by Dennis Wilkinson, John Richardson, and me. It's not perfect by any means, but it is a great improvement.
Winning times on the courses were consistent with past results from Huddart. High school freshman Zander Rosenzweig continued to demonstrate his mastery of beginner courses with by far the fastest times on first Yellow and then White. There was a large turnout from Berkeley High on White, and from Turlock NJROTC on Yellow. The Orange course featured the closest finish of the day, with Noah Vin beating the team of Joe and Julien by 44 seconds.
On the advanced courses, Chuck Spalding was victorious on Brown. Green runners, I am certain, set a record for an advanced course at Huddart with a 95% completion rate (only one DNF among 21 runners). Kevin Culberg led the way for this group. Andrej Masalkov was fastest among the small cohort of Red runners, and Anthony Riley was victorious on Blue.
