It rained. It rained a lot. Still, that didn't dampen the spirits of the 190 or so hardy folks who enjoyed an adventure in the sparkling forests and hillsides of Huddart Park. Because the park's terrain is so steep, course setters need to be wary of designing courses that are too physically demanding, or even dangerous. Matthias Kohler and I made a considerable effort to keep the grueling climbs to a minimum, and were able to avoid forcing any runners to climb out of the gigantic re-entrant (McGarvey Gulch) that bisects the park. We were rewarded with respectable winning times on all the courses, and not a lot of DNF's, especially considering the weather.
Antoine Finot zipped to a first-place finish on the White course, then turned in a very good time on Yellow. Kevin Cox was about 3 minutes behind Antoine, and then there was a large gap before other finishers.
Lizzie Adams was the winner on Yellow, although both Rex Winterbottom and the afore-mentioned Antoine had faster times running Yellow as a second course. The team of Kyle, Jessie, and Rick finished second.
The Orange course was one of the two hotly contested races: Denis Kourakin, Elliott Jones, and Cody Jacobson finished 1-2-3, all with times between one hour flat and one hour and one minute.
Brown was the most popular of the advanced courses, with as many entries (24) as Green, Red, and Blue combined. Young Daniel Šebo was first on Brown, followed by Stephanie Maclean.
Kim van Berkel took the Green course, about two minutes ahead of Tapio Karras.
The Red course was the day's other extremely close race, as Reka Zempleni finished a mere 24 seconds ahead of Travis Parker.
Finally, among the hardiest of all, the five who ran Blue, last year's course setter Mark Prior came in first and Huon Wilson was second.
