We had two great days of orienteering this past weekend, on some of the best terrain in the Bay Area!

The weather stayed dry, and on Sunday the fog finally disappeared for good around noon.

The courses set by Dennis Wildfogel received rave reviews from participants, proving challenging, but also scenic, and with good running for much of their length.

Conditions were close enough to equal on both days that we have compressed the results into one list, though there was a strange anomaly. While on Saturday, no one had any difficulty finding the "Go" control, at least six runners on Sunday missed the control and went directly to the Finish. The only answer for this that I could come up with was that they were in a hurry to try Marie-Josée's fudge, sitting on the E-punch table!

Dennis set a couple of much longer legs this time around, testing people's route-choice decisions. On one leg in particular, he set the control so that visually, it was tempting to run on the road most of the way. The problem was that you then had a significant climb up to the control, whereas if you did the gentle contour, you saved time and energy. Splits show the contour route was quicker, a fact most runners missed as they barreled down the road.

This event ran very smoothly, thanks in large part to the great volunteers for the event.

Dennis, did a wonderful job designing the courses, and updating the map. Jeff Lanam helped trouble shoot the E-punch system when a situation occurred beyond my limited knowledge base, and a big thanks to Martin Kunz, Brock Morgan, Tom De Vre, and Theo Verhoeven for quickly picking up the controls and allowing us all to head home by 3 PM.

Thanks to Dan Ingram, our new Insurance Director (among other club roles), and also to Sabrina Gonzales, the permit person for the Water District, who worked hard to get our permit issued even when forced to be out of the office for several weeks.
