The map scale is 1:3000; the contour interval is 2.5 m. The mapping standard is an old version of ISSOM (284KB PDF) (International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps), not the latest version (ISSprOM 2019-2 (1.2MB PDF)). There is no legend on the maps. If you need a legend, pick one up at registration. (This file (1MB PDF) contains a map legend that probably applies to the Berkeley map. Note all the "forbidden to cross" symbols!)
The Start is a 5-minute walk from the registration area.
The Start Triangle is located 30 meters from the start line. You must go to the Start Triangle, but there is nothing to punch there.
Note: There is a short tunnel to run through on the way from the Start to the Start Triangle. The tunnel clearance is 5 ft 11 in (180 cm). If you are six feet or taller you will need to duck.
The Beginner/Yellow course maps will be handed out at registration. The Short and Long course maps will be distributed upon starting in the normal way.
Control descriptions for the Yellow/Beginner course are on the map; loose descriptions can be picked up at registration when you get your map.
There are control descriptions on the maps for the Short and Long courses, but the font is quite small. So, competitors on these courses should pick up a loose copy that has a more readable font. The loose control descriptions for the Short and Long courses will be available at the Start.
Upon turning over your map, your first impression will be that there's a clutter of circles, lines, and numbers! Upon leaving each control, the direction to the next control might not be immediately evident. Be careful! As always, check the control codes, and punch the controls in order.
There is a Eucalyptus tree-trimming and removal program taking place on campus. The program might move from day to day, so the affected areas might or might not be marked out of bounds on the map with red slashes. There might or might not be signs or streamers on the ground. If you encounter one of these areas, go around!
Leona Creek bisects the campus from north to south. The creek is marked as out of bounds. Luckily there are seven bridges you can use to cross the creek—you must cross the creek on a bridge.
Running through planted gardens is strictly prohibited. Most of these areas are marked on the map by the dark green out-of-bounds color. The standard olive-green color is also used to indicate out-of-bounds areas.
There are many outdoor "canopy" corridors on the campus (which are mapped as light gray). Please run/walk cautiously through these corridors to avoid collisions other people. Entering any building (dark gray) is prohibited while on a course.
