Many mothers, given a choice of what to do this past Mother's Day, chose to go orienteering at Joe Grant. Smart women. Whole families came along for the ride, so the turnout was quite good, with well over 100 people attending. The weather was perfect, with low clouds keeping things cool until well into the afternoon.
Rory Maclean (13 years old) made his debut setting the White and Yellow courses, with his father Derek setting the advanced courses. Stephanie Maclean (Rory's mother) worked many tasks, including mentoring Rory, helping set up on the day of the event, and performing the entire Start. Meanwhile Rory's brother Jamie entertained the crowds. It was a pleasure to work with such a capable and dedicated family.
Many others volunteered to help with the event, including Steve Haas (both registration and control pickup), Johanna Merriss (pre-runner), Mark Blair, Theo Verhoeven, Cedric LasFargues, David Harrison, Stephen Harrison, Cornelia Coolen, Fyodor Konkov, Masha Konkov, Julia Doubson, Fillan Swift, Jim Fish, Wes Erck, Rex Winterbottom, Greg Ehrensing, and Werner Haag. Special mention goes to Rosemary Johnson and Jeff Lanam, who went through the usual near-heart-attacks in setting up and running the e-punch system. (It is a pity the Club does not have the resources to create a robust e-punch system.) Many volunteers had to be turned away for lack of available work. Especially gratifying was to see young people pitching in to help the Club, including Masha Konkov, Julia Doubson, Fillan Swift, David Harrison, and Rory Maclean — which speaks well of the continued viability of the Club.
The winners on the White and Yellow courses were decided by less than one minute. Mark Ebert took first on White, followed by Mia Janosik. Julia Doubson won Yellow, with Fillan Swift in second.
The Orange course was won by Rex Winterbottom (who normally runs Blue, but is recovering from recent surgery). Fillan Swift ran Orange as a second course, and came in second.
The competition on Brown and Green was also intense. Charlie DeWeese (visiting from the Western Connecticut Orienteering Club) edged out Dennis Wildfogel by less than a minute on Brown. Marie-Josée Parayre won Green, with Cornelia Coolen finishing second only 72 seconds later.
Tapio Karras won Red, followed by Steve Gregg. The Blue winners were Mikkel Conradi in first, and François Léonard in second.
So — everybody — please fill in your routes on RouteGadget. Years later you will be able to look back and be reminded of the fields of poppies and skittish cows.
