Event Write-Up

By Steve Haas (Registration — South Bay)

An enthusiastic group turned out to take advantage of the Stanford campus terrain, and the efforts of a new course setter, for a very good day of orienteering. The near 90-degree-F weather did not deter people, although it may have slowed some down, especially those running later or doing the Long Orange course.

Brett Carter, a Stanford graduate student in chemistry, set four fun courses in his first course-setting effort. He managed to include some interesting controls, including the top of a building and a "cave" (at least it was the symbol for a cave.) The most impressive feat, however, was that he did all the course-setting on crutches, as a result of a broken bone in his foot. Most of the weekend prior to the event was spent crutching all over the campus.

Somewhere between 80 and 90 different people ran 1 or 2 courses, with at least one person running 3 courses. Many people ran the Long Orange as a second course.

As far as results, Julia Doubson was the fastest finisher on White, while Ken Bower took Yellow honors. Mikkel Conradi finished first in the Sprint, with several people bunched closely behind. On the Long Orange course, the top finishers had all run another course earlier, either on their own or shadowing someone.

There were only two controls shared across the four courses; both were used on Yellow and the Sprint. Because of this very limited overlap, not much attempt was made to separate people doing second courses in the results.

Other aspects of the event:

  • Bob Cooley vetted the courses and made map corrections remotely, without ever getting to the campus, using on-line resources and lots of e-mail between him and the course-setter.
  • Rex Winterbottom finished the Sprint on 1.5 shoes, having lost part of one during the course.
  • Russell Neilson, president of the Stanford Orienteering Club, got permission from the University to hold the event.

A huge thank you to all of the people who helped out at the event:

  • Brett Carter – Course setting, hanging and picking up controls
  • Bob Cooley – Map vetting and printing
  • Matthias Kohler – Hanging and picking up controls
  • Scott Aster and Gary Kraght – Registration
  • Chuck Spalding – Starts
  • Jim Waite – Beginner clinics
  • Meg Gerstner, Alan Glendinning, George Minarik – Finishes and results
  • Jim Fish – Setup, and picking up controls
  • Rex Winterbottom – Bringing snacks
