Junior Orienteering Day Camp 2011

Type: J; Junior. Specifically for youth under 21 years of age (but are often open to everyone)

A one-day training camp for beginning orienteers, for the young and the young at heart

This Day Camp will be held at the Calero County Park in San Jose, in conjunction with a regular orienteering event.

When: 9 AM to 4:30 PM

Where: Meet near event registration at Calero County Park. Lunch will be at one of the nearby picnic tables.

Fee: $20 per person — includes lunch, maps, course materials, compass and e-punch finger-stick rental, and course start fees. Staff, youth staff, and helpers are free.

This will be Part 1 of a 2-part program. Part 2 of this course will take place sometime during November through February. In Part 2, you will set the course you designed for a COOL event.

This event is designed for kids, but people of any age are welcome.

Registration

22 Sept. 2011 - Packets have gone to the printers. Only four handouts left.

Preregistration is required (for mapping exercise and lunch quantity); you will pay on site. To register, email me with the following information:

  • Name
  • Age (or "adult")
  • School name and city (this will be used for a mapping exercise where you map your school from a satellite photo)
  • Completed an Orienteering course before? If so, which color?
  • Want to serve on staff (youth staff development meets prior Weekend)?

What to Bring

  • Sturdy shoes
  • Sun block
  • Canteen
  • Your favorite compass and/or finger stick (optional)

  9:00 – Route-O

11:00 – White course

12:30 – Lunch

  1:00 – Yellow Course

  3:00 – Design COOL Course

  4:15 – Part-1 graduation

  4:30 – Dismissal

Driving Directions

From the Peninsula, take Highway 85 south to Almaden Expressway. Head south 5 miles to the end of the road. Turn right onto Harry, and then immediately left onto McKean. The main park entrance is 5 miles south on McKean. Go past the boat ramp, and turn instead at the entrance marked "Calero County Park; Park Office; Equestrian Center; All Trailheads".

From the East Bay, take Highway 101 south past San Jose and exit at Bailey Ave. After 3.2 miles west, Bailey ends at McKean. Turn left and go south 0.7 miles to the park entrance.
