Saturday, May 7, was the day before Mother's Day. The weather forecast was for rain, and rain it did. The rain did not deter a large swim meet at Indian Valley College, and it did not deter a smaller but just as determined group of 120 orienteers from enjoying the "Swiss style" course setting of Martin Kunz. All seven traditional courses were offered, with some very long legs and interesting route choices, as well as some fast and furious legs through the college campus.
We were fortunate to get a large number of first-timers out, none of whom were discouraged by the rain. Many of them came from Sacramento State. The White course was won by Gitzelle Diaz; Yellow was won by the team of Christian Russ, Riggs McGrath, and Jamie Miller; and the Orange course was won by the "Good Hair Club" team.
Rex Winterbottom topped the field on the Brown course. Tobias Tornqvist narrowly bested Ann Marie Cody on Green. For the first time in my memory, there was a tie for first place on Red, between Graham Brew and Tac Sugiyama. The Blue course was won by Matej Sebo, who once again demonstrated that he is one of the best hill climbers in the U.S.
Also noticeable was the return to the Bay Area of Cornelia Coolen, if only for a visit. We've missed you, Cornelia!
Many willing hands are required to put on a successful orienteering event, and I am so appreciative of everyone who helped. In particular, big thanks go to Martin Kunz for his masterful course-setting, and to Scott Aster, who helped in many ways. The following people helped as indicated:
