By Steve Haas (Registration — South Bay)
Around 160 people showed up on a warm (maybe a little too warm) fall day for our annual event at Calero County Park.
There were more DNFs than usual, possibly due to the warm weather, possibly due to the hilly terrain at Calero, possibly just random. On the other hand, many people ran multiple courses, or helped out with control pickup after doing their courses.
The team setting out controls the afternoon before the event had close encounters with rattlesnakes very near two of the control locations. We decided to eliminate those two controls entirely from the three courses that used them. Bob Cooley managed to modify the three maps, print out the revised maps and control descriptions, and hand deliver them to the registration area on Sunday morning, from where they were relayed out to the Start area. Great teamwork!
One hazard we hadn't planned for was yellow jackets. Multiple participants on the White and Yellow courses got stung. There was nothing in the first aid kit to help with this, but among participants and volunteers we came up with some cream/ointment and ice packs. Everyone seemed to maintain good spirits despite getting stung.

Volunteers
A large number of volunteers contributed to the success of the event:
- Dan Greene and his crew of Kent Ohlund and Sean Campbell set the full complement of 7 courses.
- Bob Cooley produced the maps, including the reprinting mentioned above.
- Brian Cilker drove his van out on the trails on Saturday to deliver the control-hanging team (course-setters plus Steve Haas and Chuck Spalding²) and water for the water stops.
- Ron and Christopher Barber, Nancy Lindeman, and Shura Kretchetov helped with set-up.
- Our long-time registration wizards, Ev and Jean Beuerman, came out of retirement to smoothly handle the large crowd.
- Rosemary Johnson, Tony Pinkham, Jeff Lanam, and Mark Blair staffed E-punch.
- Peter Graube, Jim Fish, and Jeff Lanam provided beginner's clinics.
- Trinka Gillis used her 4WD vehicle to get equipment out to the Start area and then took the first shift on starts, where she was followed by Peter Graube and Werner Haag. Werner hauled the Start equipment back at the end of the day, with help from Derek Maclean and Greg Ehrensing, who made an extra trek back out there.
- Graham and Christine Brew, Dan Prudhomme, Luc Poppe, Theo Verhoeven, Cedric LasFargues, and Peter Graube picked up controls.
A big thanks to all of you, and to anyone I've inadvertently overlooked!
