A-meet Write-Up
Full-fledged forest filled with frolicking foot-orienteers forcefully forging forward to the Finish. (Okay, maybe not exactly frolicking.) Sun-soaked sportspersons sprinting stealthily, soundly assessing, smartly scooting, steadfastly sauntering, and sometimes slogging steadily up steep, slashy slopes. This was Boggs '14, a three-day celebration of orienteering blessed by spectacular weather. People from as far away as Norway and Australia joined orienteers from all over North America, testing themselves against detailed terrain with the aid of a newly revised map. A good time, apparently, was had by virtually all.
Eighteen-year-old Matej Šebo (BAOC) was the star of the meet, winning handily on Red all three days, and beating all the Blue runners on Friday as well, when Red and Blue shared the same Sprint course. Norway's Morten Saue won the last two days on Blue. Will Enger (Washington) was second overall on Blue, while Mark Prior (BAOC) finished third in both the Long and the Middle. François Léonard (BAOC) was a strong second on Red, over former U.S. Team member Clem McGrath (Pennsylvania). Sixteen-year-old Gavin Williams (BAOC) was second in M–20 behind Matej. In the closest point battle of the meet, Deron van Hoff (BAOC) edged out Paul Carson (Truckee) in M45+ by a mere 15 points (out of a possible 3000).
U.S. Team members (and Washington-staters) Tori Borish and Hannah Culberg, soon to compete in the World Orienteering Championships in Italy, traded victories in F–21+ Long and Middle. With Hannah missing the Sprint, Tori was first overall, with Tori Campbell, also of Washington, second.
Tapio Karras (BAOC) nearly swept Green, with Misha Kreslavsky (BAOC) finishing a strong second overall. Ohio's Tom Svobodny won the Green Sprint, finished third overall on Green based on combined time, and won M55+. Charlie Shahbazian (Wisconsin) made a very strong showing winning M60+. Brian Ellis (Canada) swept Brown in impressive fashion, winning M65+. Carl Moore (Washington), the oldest entrant, won M80+, and 79-year-old Alex Kerr (Canada) won M75+.
Marie-Josée Parayre (BAOC) was the top women on Green, edging out Anna Voegele (Truckee). Cornelia Coolen-Vogt (BAOC) finished first among the women on Green in the Middle and second in the Long, winning F45+. Fourteen-year-old Julia Doubsen (BAOC) won F–20. World Masters Champion Sharon Crawford (Colorado, F70+) and Marg Ellis (Canada, F65+) were the top women on Brown; each had a day where they finished behind only Brian Ellis. Katie Petersen (BAOC), only 15, won F–18 and is now the top-ranked U.S. orienteer in that category.
Ten-year-old(!) Daniel Šebo (BAOC) finished first overall on Orange, with Sarah Petersen (BAOC), recovering from leg surgery, being the first overall female on that course. Gian Coolen (BAOC) had the fastest Orange times on the Long and Middle. Kiki Weber (GCO, F–14) finished first overall on Yellow; Australia's Daniel Gray (M–14), who missed the Sprint, had very fast times in the Yellow Long and Middle. The White course was topped by Norway's Fritjof Aderstedt-Althof (M–12) and Anna Campbell (F–10) of Washington.
It takes a veritable army to put on a 3-day A-meet, and we were fortunate to have many, many volunteers. To the extent that the meet was a success, it was due to the efforts of the following people:
- Course setters Bill and Heidi Cusworth—Doesn't matter what anyone else does: if you don't have good courses, you don't have a good meet. Thanks to Heidi and Bill, we had great courses. They spent more hours course setting than any course setters I've ever worked with. They were very responsive to suggestions from the vetters, the course consultant, and the Event Director (ED), revising the courses over and over, improving them with each iteration. They spent 100 hours re-mapping, with great results. They hung controls, got water out on the course, flagged the routes to the various starts, and did it all with enthusiasm and good cheer.
- Vetter Chuck Spalding spent several days at Boggs and filed copious and thoughtful vetting reports that helped improve the Middle and Long courses significantly. At the meet itself, Chuck pitched in in so many ways: setup, cleanup, moving the Start, Beginners Clinic, and more. And, as always, Chuck was the main man in keeping the webpage spiffy and up to date.
- Vetter Greg Ehrensing made several trips to Boggs, roaming the park far and wide. Greg was also instrumental in getting equipment from place to place.
- Registrar Trinka Gillis worked on the meet for many months, produced all the necessary start lists, and staffed Registration for many hours all three days.
- Start Crew Chief Steve Haas bore the brunt of my maniacal attention to minutia, always doing what I asked and doing it with good humor. Steve was also pivotal in getting equipment from different places to Boggs, and worked the entire start window all three days, after starting the early runners well before hand. Setup, cleanup, moving the Start from place to place—Steve never stopped working.
- Assistant ED (Long) Marie-Josée Parayre, who effectively became the Assistant ED for the Middle as well, and who did a thousand things that needed doing.
- Matthias Kohler, who seemed to be working constantly all three days when he wasn't out on a course, doing things I asked of him and things I didn't even think of.
- Trail-O Course Setter Nick Corsano, who made many trips to Boggs, and who by all accounts created a truly challenging course in terrain not especially suited to that discipline.
- Steph Maclean, who created the fabulous awards and T-shirts.
- Dan Greene, Assistant ED for the Sprint and radio maven
- Parking & Traffic Control Co-Chiefs Vicki Woolworth, Chris Brew, and Graham Brew (it was Graham who printed out those speed-limit signs)
- Jay Hann, who was in charge of the Junior Pavilion, brought up all the food and electrolytes, and calculated the scores for the Western States Interscholastic Championships
- Gavin Wyatt-Mair and Steve Beuerman, Trail-O ED and vetter, respectively
- Nancy Lindeman, who coordinated camping and the Saturday night Pot-luck dinner
- Vladimir Gusiatnikov, OUSA Course Consultant, whose suggestions significantly improved the Sprint
- Gary Kraght, Assistant Registrar and overall A-meet consultant
Shout-outs to:
- The early runners: François Léonard, Bruce Wolfe, and Evan Custer at 8:00 AM on Saturday (who combined to find a mis-hung control in time to correct it); and Greg Walker, Carol Ross Walker, Steve Harrison, and Evan again, who went out at 7:00 AM(!) Sunday (plus Steve Haas, who started them both days)
- The E-punch Crew, led by Jeff Lanam, and including Tony Pinkham, George Minarik, and Evan Custer, with assistance from pre-teens Daniel Šebo and Gian Coolen
- Everyone on the Control Pickup Crews, headed by Theo Verhoeven and Lubo Šebo
- Deron van Hoff, who drove around the park for two hours on Friday dropping of water for the courses, then was an early runner for the Sprint, and then staffed the entrance for Traffic Control
- All the people in the Boggs Bagel and Banana Brigade.

At the meet, someone said that the Finish chute was the longest in BAOC history. Only fitting, then, that this final sprint to the finish by the ED is in contention for one of the longest event write-ups ever. ☺

Trail-OÂ Write-Up
The Boggs Mountain Trail Orienteering national ranking event was fun! A real intellectual challenge! The results of this event will be included in the selection criteria for the U.S. National Trail Orienteering Team in the future.
We had a total of 31 participants, mostly in the Open class. The course was difficult, with 13 brain-teasing controls distributed along a 2.5 km trail.
Our Paralympic winner was David Irving, who figured out 13 of the 15 controls correctly. In the Open class, the winner was Deron van Hoff, who also got 13 of the 15 correct. And in the Juniors class, Rory Maclean won with 8 correct controls.
Our second-place contestants were Catherine Yekenevicz in the Paralympic class, and Nik Weber in the Open class, while Vicki Woolworth staged a third-place finish in the Open class.
As those familiar with Trail-O will know, the rules of Trail-O allow contestants to challenge the validity of a control. There are two challenges available: Complaints and Protests. A Complaint was lodged at Boggs, regarding one of the controls. The Complaint was upheld by the Course setter, and the control was voided. However, the voiding of the control was then Protested, and the Jury was asked to render a judgment. After considerable deliberation, the Jury reinstated the control that had been voided based upon a preponderance of the evidence. This Complaint-Protest-Jury method of ensuring fairness worked very well.
The rules used for this Trail-O event were those adopted by OUSA as of the date of the event. Interestingly, the IOF has adopted some new rules for Trail-O, which OUSA has not yet adopted. The most interesting feature of the new rules is associated with the timed controls, which generated some interesting discussion. The results would have been different under the new IOF rules!!!

Course setter Nick Corsano deserves an extra-special thank you! He travelled from the Mid Peninsula to Boggs Mountain several times, to study the terrain and design the courses. It takes a huge amount of time, concentration, and attention-to-detail to design a Trail-O course, and Nick did an outstanding job. The course was challenging yet fair, and well suited to a National ranking event. Well done Nick!!
