It was a cool morning that threatened of rain, but rain never came—a perfect day for Orienteering. At this first meet of the season we had seventeen students compete, with William Morris doing a second course on Orange.
The ground was very wet after a week's worth of rain, and there was mud everywhere. You could gain two inches in height just by walking around and having the mud stick to the bottom of your feet.
Gavin Williams was the real hero today, as the only one to get close to a 10-minute pace.
In the elementary classes Julia Doubson and Elena Belk were the only other ones in the entire league to get under a 15-minute pace. They took first and second place for the Elementary Girls. Karina Malalkovaite was just under a 20-minute pace, taking third pace. The rest of the Elementary runners were between a 20- and 30-minute pace.
This year we have two veterans move up from Elementary to Middle School, and they were the entire Middle School field, with David Harrison just edging out William Morris for the win.
On the High School front, we had Daniel and Philipp Kopisch move from Middle School to High School Varsity, skipping High School JV entirely. In addition, Long Dan and Jimmy Chung made the move from JV to Varsity. This apparently was not the course to do that. The Green course was unusually hard, and neither Jimmy nor Long was able to finish it. Veteran Cameron Ferguson took the honors, with Daniel and Philipp taking second and third.
A big thanks to all who helped with this meet!
