Here are the 1995 BAOC Rankings. They are a mathematical concoction based on the event results. More details on these rankings and the mathematics behind them can be found with the 1994 BAOC Club Rankings and in the following issues of the BAOC Bulletin: Jan/Feb 1993, Jan/Feb 1994, Jul/Aug 1994, and Jan/Feb 1995.

Methodology

The numbers generated in the rankings are somewhat of an "average" of all results of all competitors on the courses they did this year, as if they had all run one event together. The "Result" is a number approximating "orienteering speed" on courses in 1995, and "Time" is the time each person would be expected to have on a "typical" Green (or Orange) course. (The "typical" advanced course is one of about Green level difficulty, with a GV of 5000; a "typical" Orange course was chosen at a GV of 60000.)

Courses Used

All regular point-to-point courses (not Score-O, Phantom-O, etc.)
Advanced: Blue, Red, Green, Brown, including the Long-O
Orange: Orange, including Yellow/Orange (2 events this year)
Not included: Sunol Green (misplaced control), Joaquin Miller Advanced (meet director request)

Everyone who started 3 or more courses which were included in the rankings
Groups of the same people each time who started 3 courses

Highlights of the Results

Advanced leaders: James Scarborough and Penny DeMoss .
Top Juniors: Sarah Minarik (F14 on Orange & Advanced), Brett Sarnquist (M18 on Advanced), Joe Papendick (M16 on Orange).
Most creative spelling: "Pascal & Kirsten Vin" was spelled 8 different ways in results this year.
Too many DNFs affected a few people's points this year, especially Leslie Minarik, with each of her relevant advanced results being DNFs.
Most active: Thorsten Graeve and George Minarik both competed on 16 advanced BAOC courses this year, followed by Gary Carpenter, Dennis Wildfogel, and Mark Blair with 15. Leslie Minarik ran 13 Orange courses this year and 3 advanced courses for a total of 16.
Twice as fast? Almost! This year's Most Improved Orienteer, Robert Rich, was finishing advanced courses this year about 75% faster than last year.
Tough course? The Blue Long-O course was about 8 times as hard as the Brown course at Shell Ridge.
Tough regular course awards: Shell Ridge had the toughest regular Blue; Big Basin the toughest Red; and China Camp the toughest Green, Brown, and Orange courses.
BAOCers ranked 1, 2, 3, and 4 were all on the same relay team to win the 1995 US Relay Championships (Open Division) in Pennsylvania this June.
Over twice as many women were ranked this year: 21 to last year's 10.
Ed and Donna Gookin (M60 & F60 from SDO) were fast enough in their 4 appearances in the Bay Area to have won any category from M45/F45 on up.
Alan Glendinning always seems to end up in close calls, this time edging out George Minarik by about 2/3 of a second!
